– Normally, the stomach lining is protected from acid by a thick layer of mucus. – Peptic ulcer disease occurs when there is a defect in the protective factors lining the stomach resulting in ulcers in the stomach, esophagus, or duodenum. – Main Causes: A) Helicobacter pylori: a bacterial infection, most associated with peptic ulcer disease. B) Chronic NSAID use: 2nd most common cause •Risk Factors: Smoking, alcohol, stress, old age, anticoagulants, bisphosphonates |
